New Faces ( GRP / 1985 )

Young musicians by his side, a fresh take on some old, well known originals, two new groovy pieces, and Dizzy Gillespie re-emerges from the old ‘bop legend’ category, capturing a jazz funk loving younger generation. Gillespie adds his signature Afro-Cuban flavors to the ideal combination of jazz, funk and Latin music laid down by the ‘New Faces’. The sound is clean and crisp with such a positive tone. It sounds like everybody is having fun and the cheerful mood is contagious. The chemistry between Lonnie Plaxico and Robbie Ameen is audible. Branford Marsalis complements Dizzy Gillespie perfectly, giving the old pieces a fresh touch. His teammate Kenny Kirkland contributes to the lighthearted sound with his accurate and melodic style. It’s a rare record, of which all pieces are SomehowJazz favorites.
