Jaco Pastorius – Jaco Pastorius ( Epic/Legacy / 1976 )

The self-titled first solo album of Jaco Pastorius was produced by Bobby Colomby, who wanted to introduce a young talent. With the collaboration of a lineup of extraordinary musicians and new compositions, it became a remarkable project underlining Jaco’s undeniable mark on jazz music.
Totally free of a style concept, the album starts with a bop interpretation “Donna Lee” by Charlie Parker and explodes into a fantastic soul funk number Come On, Come Over featuring Sam & Dave. With a fresh, almost play like approach to composition and arrangement, (just listen to “Kuru”‘s string arrangement combined with Hancock’s “Speak Like A Child”) the album is mind opening and inspiring. Carried along with Wayne Shorter’s soprano solo, Opus Pocus creates a magic mood, followed by ‘”Okonkole Y Trompa”s mysterious melody floating over the congas. Hubert Laws’ piccolo lead and Herbie Hancock‘s solo on “(UsedTo Be A) Cha Cha” remain unforgettable. What sets the concept of this record after all, is Jaco Pastorius’ unmistakable music, though every track is uniquely varying in style.
This album is one of the fundamental stones of SomehowJazz‘ music concept.
